2017 Session Schedule

Wednesday, September 20th 
OUTSIDE, 9:00 to 10:00am Bucket Truck Safety and Maintenance, Mark True Many accidents can be avoided with proper maintenance and with educated operators.  This session, which will take place around a bucket truck for visual aid, will provide an in-depth explanation of how to properly maintain your bucket truck, how to perform a routine inspection, the importance of proper training, and more.  The goal is to keep you informed so you can continue to operate safely. Participants receive certificate of completion.

9:00 to 9:45am MUTCD Refresher, Recent Updates and the Digital Print Revolution, presented by 3M and WorldTech A brief refresher to the 2009 MUTCD, session will include pertinent sign standards and guidelines, upcoming compliance dates, and an introduction to sign management methods municipalities can adopt to meet FHWA retroreflectivity requirements, and information and guidance relative to Massachusetts’ recently passed Municipal Modernization Act regarding changes to Speed Limit Regulations under Chapter 90, Sections 17 and 18.

Hazard Tree Characteristics, Brian Favreau, Favreau Forrestry Learn to spot the tree with potential for hazard and how to trim/ care/ mitigate it.  This session overviews hazard identification (root problems, poor crown architecture, decay, etc…), reviews potential treatment options and examines overall tree management.

Repairing Asphalt in Wet and Cold Conditions, Annie Kelley, Roadstone Productions This session will provide attendees with a simulation of how to quickly repair a pot hole with water, a pail of ready to use cold mix and a tamper! This classroom demonstration showcases this product and technique and is meant to educate attendees on how to repair pot holes permanently with environmentally friendly alternatives and the best part- it can be done in below freezing temperatures.

Confined Space Awareness, Trainers from the New England Consortium Participants will be introduced to OSHA Confined Space Regulations for construction and general industry. Participants will have an opportunity to work with personal protective equipment, air monitoring equipment, entry permits, regulations, and additional resources typically used and consulted when conducting permit required confined space entry.  Participants receive certificate of completion.

9:45 to 10:30am Lessons Learned through Accident Investigation at DPWs, Mary Dozois, Mass DLS  The Massachusetts Department of Labor Standards conducts accident investigations and enforces OSHA standards at state, county and municipal workplaces. This presentation will review photos of recent accident investigations at highway, wastewater and drinking water departments. The purpose of the presentation is to assist DPWs identify and prevent similar scenarios in their own workplaces.

The Power of Salt Brine, Pam Buckley, Douglas Dynamics Learn how to incorporate Salt Brine into you snow and ice control winter maintenance program. Understand how using salt brine can reduce your salt budget up to 50% or more. Reduce the impact of over salting to the environment in your community.

Pavement Management – The Right Repair at the Right Time, Conrad Leger, Beta Selecting the right repair at the right time is the first step you can take to successfully treat your roadways. The presentation will focus on the selection process you go through when deciding whether to use a particular treatment. We will discuss a variety of treatments that can be used at different stages of a roadway’s life cycle.

Pipe Inspection Using Digital Camera Technology, Rich Corsetti, BMC CCTV Investigations,  A streaming visual of “Pre pavement & Post Construction Inspections” along with informative uses of CCTV surveys.

“September 30, 2008. That’s the day my life changed forever.  1 split second of ONE single ordinary day at work and my life would cease to exist as I knew it. I was working in a hydro electric yard, working alone in a man lift 20′ aloft, installing the final bolts in some steel structures we had erected the week before….”  Dan received 3rd degree burns on 70% of his body and lost the tips of all his fingers.  Come hear about his story and his struggle to recovery and most important- lessons learned.

OUTSIDE, 9:00 to 9:45am Live Demonstration,  Crafco Patcher II Material Melter utilizing Crafco Mastic One  Demo 1 – T2 Asphalt Recycler- Make fresh construction grade asphalt using discarded utility cuts and Millings. Demo 2 – Crafco Patcher II Material Melter- Repair wide crack repair over 1 ½ inches utilizing Crafco Mastic One Material.

9:00 to 9:45am Accident Prevention Through Stress Management, Hilary Hackbart, Mass Department of Labor Standards Learn what stress does to the body and brain, and how being stressed significantly increases the risk of accidents.  Learn simple, quick, and effective techniques you can use to get out of a state of stress, work safer, and feel better.

Work Zone Set Up- Catherine, Schoenenberger, Stay Safe Traffic Products Work zone safety is paramount when it comes to DPW duties.  This session will overview typical situations faced in the work zone and how to safely set up your temporary traffic control zone.  Participants receive certificate of completion.

Showcase: The Evolution of Thermoplastic Pipe Manufactured by ADS, Aaron Cheever, ADS Established in 1966, ADS began simply as a producer of corrugated high density polyethylene (HDPE) pipe. Over the years ADS has evolved its HDPE pipe offering, as well as added high performance polypropylene pipe to its product portfolio. During the Session learn about different pipe materials, why ADS continues to evolve their pipe offerings, and how they can be utilized to improve infrastructure in your Town/City/County/State.

9:45 to 10:30am MS4 Stormwater and its Effect on Towns, Natalie Pommersheim, Environmental Partners An overview of the MS4 Stormwater Permit effective July 2018. The session will focus on the two minimum control measures that are directly related to Public Works departments’ workflow.

Beavers and the Law, Susan McCarthy, MassWildlife This session will overview the options for dealing with heavy beaver populations in your town.  Learn about what laws are in place to protect both the town and the furry creatures.

10:30 to 11:15am How to Save Time with State Contracts, Panel Discussion, Katherine Morse hosts panel  Learn how statewide contracts focused on facilities, vehicles and energy can help your organization.  The Operational Services Division (OSD) develops and manages statewide contracts, which you can use as alternatives to Chapter 30B procurements. We will briefly cover the components of contracts relevant to DPW and show you how to access information on them.

Drones: Their Use in Planning, Mapping and Surveying, David Price, GPI This session demonstrates how orthomosaics are made from a drone, and how the information is useful for planning, mapping, and surveying.  Following a short classroom session, an outdoors demonstration using drones will be held.

Premium Liquid Deicers and Enhancing Salt Brine, Joe Cashin, Innovative Surface Solutions An analysis of liquid anti-icing, and deicing. Understanding the pros and cons of utilizing salt brine, and how enhancing brine can lead to more savings.
